Biographies
Mr. R. Courtney Hughes, Attorney At Law
Mr. R. Courtney Hughes has been a Trial Lawyer for Plaintiffs in Southern Illinois for over 30 years. Mr. Hughes does not represent insurance companies and he does not represent corporations or big business. Mr. Hughes represents the proverbial "little guy" to equalize the power between his "little guy" client and the big insurance company on the other side.
Mr. Hughes has been the lead Plaintiff Attorney representing the victims of negligent injury or death in numerous prominent cases in Southern Illinois. Mr. Hughes has set verdict records in Southern Illinois counties. Mr. Hughes has been prominently featured in the Southern Illinois media regarding such cases as the September 2017 verdict in the Jackson County, Illinois case of Adams and Borum v. Terminix wherein a Terminix company driver caused a rear end crash in a construction zone injuring two (2) state workers. One of the workers settled his case against Terminix the night before closing arguments for the sum of $2.75 million dollars. The other Plaintiff went to verdict resulting in an award of$2,366,779.28 in compensatory damages plus $2,500.00 in punitive damages against the driver individually. In Holmes v. City of Marion, Mr. Hughes filed suit against the City of Marion police department for shooting the innocent hostage during a hostage scenario. The Holmes case in Williamson County, Illinois resulted in a confidential settlement. The Yates v. Legates Emergency Services of Southern Illinois case was a wrongful death medical malpractice case against an emergency room physician and ER company. In Yates, the Williamson County, Illinois jury returned a verdict in November 2013 of$2.439 million dollars in one of the largest wrongful death malpractice verdicts in Williamson County history. The verdict exceeded the insurance coverage of the doctor but the insurance company paid the verdict in full by May 14, 2014. The case of Day v. Franklin Hospital resulted in a medical malpractice verdict record of over $1.51 million dollars in Franklin County Circuit Court, Benton, Illinois involving a partial foot amputation. The Roznowski v. Mt. Vernon Raceway case was a race car accident where a race car vaulted into the spectator stands from the race track killing two persons and injuring others. The Roznowski case ended with a confidential settlement. In the case of Snyder v. Franklin County Sheriff Mr. Hughes settled a wrongful death case arising out of the medical malpractice of a prison nurse caring for a county jail inmate. Mr. Hughes tried a wrongful death case in Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinois due to the decapitation death of a spectator after an explosion during a replica cannon event. That wrongful death trial resulted in the largest wrongful death verdict in Gallatin County history in Bowles v. New Haven American Legion.
In 2012 Mr. Hughes secured an excess insurance coverage settlement for a medical malpractice uterine perforation injury case of$3.5 million dollars in the case of Hutchins v. New Horizons Ob-Gyn Clinic in Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois. The insurance coverage was originally only $2 million dollars but Mr. Hughes forced the insurance company to pay $3.5 million dollars or face an excess jury verdict in Jackson County, Illinois.
In the 2014 case of Clara and George Nehring v. Southern Illinois Medical Services (MAIC) Mr. Hughes secured a settlement of$ 1.65 million in a case where Mrs. Clara Nehring suffered a perforated esophagus during a Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication surgery at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
